Record Collection

At last, the moment has come to write my first blog post. I’m very passionate about music, so I’ve decided to write about my vinyl record collection. As I mentioned in my introduction, my major is journalism and I love writing, but I also have a strong passion for music. I enjoy writing my own songs and poetry, so as you can probably imagine, music is a huge part of my life. I’m only 20 years old, but there is just something about vinyl records that I love. I just find records to be very nostalgic. Maybe it’s the 12” artwork (or 7” in some cases), the amazing sound that you can’t find on a CD/iPod, or discovering an awesome remix/unreleased track.  I also don’t mind a few crackles and pops (as long as it’s not too many of course)- they give the music a rustic sound, which I love. I’m really glad that vinyl records are making a comeback. The downside is that record costs might increase which isn’t good news for myself- a college student who collects records. Regardless of the costs, I’m just happy that more music lovers everywhere are starting to appreciate vinyl records again.

I’ve always been fascinated by my mother’s record collection, so two years ago, I started my very own collection. My record collection might seem small compared to others’ collections, but I’m very proud of it. I collect Mariah Carey records, since Carey is my favorite artist of all time and my musical idol. I’ve uploaded a picture of my record collection below.

First row (from left to right): Mariah Carey (Self-titled), Emotions, and Music Box. Second row (from left to right): E=MC2, Someday (Single), and Always Be My Baby (Single). Third row (from left to right): Honey (Single), Heartbreaker (Single), and I Still Believe (The remixes).

As you can see, some of my records are singles, but lately, I’ve been making a conscious effort not to purchase any more singles. I feel as though they’re a bit of a waste of money, unless you really love the single itself, which explains why I purchased “Someday” and “Always Be My baby.” Those are a few of my favorite Mariah Carey songs.

With that being said, I’m now on a mission to own every Mariah Carey album on vinyl. Daydream, Butterfly, Rainbow, Charmbracelet, The Emancipation of MiMi, and Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel would complete my Mariah Carey record collection. I know that Carey is set to release a new album soon, so that I’ll be on the look-out for that album as well. As you know, I’m always looking to expand my record collection, so whenever I’m able to purchase a new record, I will post it and upload pictures.

So, what about the rest of you? Do any of you have a record collection that you’re really proud of? If so, please share your collections. I’d love to see what other people are collecting! Also, feel free to share your thoughts on vinyl records. What do you love about them?
