After a few years of being overworked, the always classy and sophisticated Alicia Keys took some much-needed time for herself. “There were definitely things going on with me that weren’t right,” she told the now defunct Giant magazine back in 2008. “I was feeling sad all the time, and I couldn’t shake it. I couldn’t sleep […] I guess you could say I was losing it.”
2. Halle Berry
After divorcing her first husband David Justice, Halle attempted to commit suicide. The Academy award winner and mother of two later opened up to Parade magazine about one of the darkest moments of life: “I was sitting in my car, and I knew the gas was coming when I had an image of my mother finding me. She sacrificed so much for her children, and to end my life would be an incredibly selfish thing to do.”
3. Janet Jackson
The international pop star has always been open and honest about her struggles with self-esteem, body image and depression. In her 2011 memoir, True You, Jackson revealed, “The truth, though, is that being in the spotlight can complicate personal problems even more. You never have a chance to deal with yourself privately and work through issues on your own. Everything is on display for the world to see.”
